From San Francisco, California the organisation Persian Women in Tech was in London this past Thursday 26th celebrating the launch of a new platform at the Airbnb headquarters.
Sepideh Nasiti, founder and CEO of Persian Women in Technology describes the organisation's goal as creating a community of support for Iranian women in technology.
Speaking to Kayhanlife, an online blog on the eve of the organisation's launch in London, she explained the idea came up after witnessing that Iranian women in technology were invisible.
“I decided to start PWIT after a conversation with an Iranian friend who was looking for an Iranian woman engineer but was not able to locate one. I saw [that there was an absence of] community for Iranian women in technology and decided to create this platform,” said Nasiti.
The organisation aims to bring Iranian women together so that they can support each other, because "when women support, assist, and encourage each other's achievements, incredible things happen, and new ground is broken," as they state in their website.
“I hope that through PWIT’s platform, we are able to create a new movement of Iranian women in tech who support each other by creating opportunities – i.e. friendships, experiences, networks and professional relationships that may impact them not just today but in the future!” she added.
Nasiti outlined showcasing women in technology role models, the impact they have on companies, the economy and communities as her organisation’s mission.
The Persian Women in Tech is based in California and represents more than 2000 women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). After London the organisation has other launches slated for Washington D.C., New York City, Stockholm, Vancouver in line to increase the awareness of Iranian women in Tech.
“Our goal is to raise the profile of Iranian women in tech, and judging by the turnout of our past events, I'm confident we will be able to showcase the contribution of Iranian women in their local communities, as well as the impact they are having on global economies,” said Nasiti.
